G.A.N.G. Post #5 – No Needs?

The old man eyed the group. “Now that we seem to have settled minor differences, lets see to Noddle’s item. I do believe you didn’t bring one to me last night. Troubles of the past, I wonder…?”

He paused for a moment while he considered the cloak. “Not much is known about this cloak. Not even I know anything about it. I found this at a clothing shop far to the south in Dalma, a village of no repute selling what little it can provide to travellers who might need it. While finding a cloak in a clothing store is indeed no big discovery, this cloak seemed…different. The design is not of the local fashion, and it carries an air of magical ability about it, but what it can do, I haven’t the foggiest. Perhaps its previous owner left it behind as a gift of good will. Perhaps that owner wanted to be rid of it. Whatever the case may be, its yours to use, but only if you promise to tell me what it does when you find out.”

Welcome, Noddle! You are a male gnome Thief.

Str: 10 Dex: 16 Con: 12 Int: 14 Wis: 13 Cha: 12

HP: 7/7 MP 6/6 AC: 13 Speed: 30 ft.

Thievery: Training has allowed you to pick locks and disarm traps with a difficulty level up to your current level/2 for free with the appropriate tools. If you wish to disarm traps and locks of a higher level, you will need to spend 1 MP/level higher, as it will take some extra thought to tackle those tough-to-break contraptions.

Abilities:

Sneak Attack: Concentration and a good knowledge of anatomy allows you to make a powerful blow on your enemy’s vitals. Provided that your target is unaware of your presence (by sneaking, being distracted by another in combat, etc.), you can attack your opponent where it really hurts, causing an extra 1d6 damage. MP Cost: 2

Improvise: By scavenging around for materials, you can be just like MacGuyver! If the materials around are able to support a task, you can think of a way to use them to your advantage. MP Cost: 1

Noddle recieves Mysterious Cloak!

Equipment: Cloak, clothes on back

The old man regards the toolbox next. “I would tell you the story behind this, but then I’d have to let the others pick out another item, too. No, we will learn this item’s story later, perhaps when you are more ready for it. Please, return it where you found it.

“Now, I understand that you’re eager to get going, but you should at least stock up on some provisions before you set out. You wouldn’t want to be lacking of medicines or food, would you?”

GM’S NOTE: This is your opportunity to stock up on things for healing, killing, surviving, etc! Even a simple note about help on some needs will be sufficient!

Bren thought for a moment and asked for spare strings for his lute and the newly acquired harp as well as food rations and a good hunting knife.

PLAYER NOTE: Is armor considered to be part of the items we stock up on since that would help with the “surviving” part?

Noddle thought about where this group was headed. He didn’t know much about the Arphen mountains or Skyrock Peak in particular, but he knew enough about the terrain to want to be prepared. He found the writing desk, pulled out some parchment and a quill, then began his list. He paused every once in a while to stare out the window wondering what else he could need. The quill would always tickle his nose when he held it to close. The stifled laughter was still obvious.

After a few minutes, Noddle approached the still nameless old man and gave him his list.

    Weapons, armor, and tools:
    1 short sword
    1 dagger
    1 short bow
    2 quivers of arrows
    1 hammer
    1 chisel/crowbar
    1 suit leather armor, small
    1 set thieves tools
    1 small shovel
    1 handaxe

    Camp and adventuring gear:
    1 backpack
    3 extra sacks, empty
    1 bedroll
    1 set winter clothes
    1 tent
    7 days of trail rations
    1 camp cooking pot
1 mug (tin preferably, but clay will do)
1 set common spices (salt, pepper, dried seasonal herbs)
    3 fishing hooks
    50′ fishing line
2 set sewing needles with thread
    1 waterskin
    1 winter blanket
    1 set flint and steel
    1 whetstone
5 torches (or 1 everburning torch)
    1 lantern, hooded
    1 small mirror
    5 flasks oil
1 set climbing gear (pitons, clasps, etc)
    1 50′ rope
    1 healing kit
    3 potions of curing

(Silly Chris. You said to stock up. Of course, magical versions of some of the mundane items will be welcomed as a substitute and upgrade.)

Anhaga thought briefly, and said, “If I’m to copy that book, I’m going to need a pen and inkwell, alongside blank pages of paper to write things on. I’ll also need some sort of waterproof bag to carry things in, and if I’m to go on your quest, some bread for the road.”

After watching the halfling give the old man his rather extensive list Bren considered things for a moment longer and made the small addendum to his request of a bedroll, a spare cloak, and a weapon suitable for one such as himself. He required nothing fancy and could certainly not weild anything too heavy. “A rapier would be nice but I will not ask for such a thing, I am pushing my luck as it is, what with all that the silly halfling just requested.” Bren thought as he awaited the old man’s reply.

[BTW, Good Lord Sean! Can your character even carry all that?!]

Noddle mused on his list. Most of what the party may need was in there. A bit of preparation could go a long way. He mused himself with what a halfling would actually request. That would be a silly list indeed. It would contain little trinkets and would be largely unusable. He contented himself on being a gnome: a race of fairly practical tinkerers if not a tad on the mischievous side. He’s met others who mistook the differences before, even confusing him with a child. Humans mostly. They didn’t seem to g’now very much about gnomes.

Chris, I’m not sure what I did with my last comment…it might not even have reached you, but a new one is headed your way. Sorry!
Please use the one from Tal, not Andrew. Thanks!

Talborenor considered the Gnome’s list, and laughed to himself. At least the short fellow was good at what he did, and seemed to have a practical view on adventuring. Taking the quill and paper, Tal set to his own request list:

    Arms and Armor:
    1 Skinning knife
    1 pair Heavy boots
1 suit Heavy armor (pref. worn in w/ rust spots)
    1 Heavy wool cloak
    3 Small throwing axes

    Survival and the like:
    1 Large traveling pack
    1 Small blanket
1 Set of flint and striker
    1 frying pan
    2 Sharpening stones
1 Large can of salt (for preservation purposes)
    1 Large canvas tarp
    1 Heavy hammer
    10 Steel tent stakes
    5 20′ lengths of rope
1 Box of long-leaf pipe tobacco
1 New pipe (his last was broken in a fall)

“And two interesting requests, but only if they might not trouble you or set you out too badly.
    1. A good, stout magical bag of holding. No sense in wasting good muscle strength that could be used to hew orcs!)
    2. One of the curious contraptions used by the dark elves which appears to be a small buckler strapped to the arm, with a tiny crossbow built into the thing. I doubt you have one, but would love to at least examine it if you do!
    My profound thanks: Talborenor Stonehewer.”

With that, the thick Dwarf handed turned in his list and began trying to discern the runes which covered his newly-acquired pair of handaxes.

After hearing the others, Anhaga added to his order, “I like the sound of that bag of holding, and I’d like a pillow.” He, then, left it at that. Anhaga didn’t want much, but he might find some worthy relics.
